There are a few things you should know before considering the treatment for yourself. Teeth whitening is only safe when carried out by a dental professional. For more information about safe teeth whitening visit www.bda.org/public/whitening. Most people will see a positive change but there are some things that can stop the treatment from working. These include crowns or large white fillings on the front teeth. Also, whitening your teeth might not be recommended if you have excessive sensitivity to hot or cold drinks as the treatment itself can cause some temporary sensitivity. It is very important to make sure that you have healthy teeth and gums before starting any cosmetic dental treatment as decay or gum disease can be made worse.
If you decide to go ahead you will be invited to the practice for two appointments. At the first you will be assessed by the dentist, and if all is well, you will have impressions taken to make custom fitted trays. The trays take a few days to process and are made from a thin, flexible plastic and are comfortable to wear. At the second appointment the dentist will make sure these trays fit well in your mouth and you will be shown exactly when and what to do each time you whiten your teeth… then you’ll be ready and raring to go! Remember to ask any questions you may have at either of these appointments, but don’t worry if you forget, the practice is only a phone call away!
